The Sammy Glass Family have been traveling in full time music evangelism since 1988. Although their home is a small town in East Tennessee, Decatur, TN, their travels have taken them into most of the eastern and mid-western states. They are on the road between two hundred twenty to two hundred fifty days out of the year ministering in churches, concerts, revivals, campmeetings, fairs, and other various events. The group consist of Sammy, his wife, Gayla, their daughter, Candice, and their two sons, Justin and Christopher. Sammy and Gayla have been involved in Gospel music most of their lives. Sammy sang with his family, the Telestials, since his sophomore year of high school . At that time, they were based out of the small south Georgia town, Quitman. He never dreamed two years later, they would move to a big city like Nashville, TN and be on stage at the Grand 'Ole Opry Sunday Night Sing with groups such as the Whites and the Oak Ridge Boys. Gayla sang and played piano with her family, the Henry Singers, for many years. During that time, she and her brother, David Henry, wrote the song, "When I Need Him Most," recorded by the Florida Boys in 1979. While Gayla was studying music at Belmont College in Nashville, TN, the Telestials asked her to fill in on the piano, and it was love at first sight for Sammy, although it took him a year to convince Gayla! In December of 1981, Gayla and Sammy were married by her father, Rev. John Henry, and so began their little family. In July of 1984, a little red headed baby girl, Candice, was born. The very next year, in September of 1985, their first son, Justin, was born. During this time, Gayla continued to travel with the Telestials, just taking a brief time off for the babies' births. In July of 1987, another baby boy, Christopher, was born, and Gayla decided to come off the road, having a baby and two toddlers to care for. Sammy continued to travel with his family, the Telestials. Sammy remembers back when he first shared with his mom and dad, Beth and Jim Glass, how he believed God was leading him to start a new ministry with his wife and children, since God had already opened many doors for Sammy to minister in revivals with Gayla and their small children. Leaving the Telestials, his mom, dad, sister, and brother in law, was one of the hardest decisions he ever had to make, but after praying for nearly a year, he knew it was God's will. Now, after sixteen marvelous years of ministering with Gayla, Candice, Justin, and Chris, he is thankful he followed God's leadership. All of the kids have loved to sing ever since they could talk. They were home schooled through the Abeka Video Program, enabling them to travel and sing and still get a great education. Candice, the oldest of the three kids, is 23 years old. She started writing songs at a very young age. "With Love He Died," a song that she wrote when she was fourteen years old, was the first song the group recorded of hers. In August of 2001, she borrowed her first mandolin, and within a few weeks started playing it on stage. She has also taken up the violin (or fiddle) and had her debut with it on stage in June of 2004. Justin, the middle child, is 22 years old and sings and plays the drums for the group. He also plays the bass guitar on their recordings. He got his first drum set for Christmas when he was fourteen years old and started playing the drums on stage when he was sixteen years old. During the same time that he was learning the drums, he also picked up the bass guitar, and within a couple of days of first picking it up, he was playing it on stage. Chris, the baby of the family, is 20 years old. He got his first guitar for Christmas when he was twelve years old and started playing on stage when he was thirteen years old. He got his first dobro in July of 2004 and plays it on stage as well. Chris also started writing songs at a young age, and you will find his first recorded song, "I Am," on their recording, "The Road Ahead Leads Home." The Sammy Glass Family thank the Lord, first and foremost, for His calling on their lives and blessing them to be able to sing Gospel music as a family. They are also very thankful for all the groups who have led the way before them and influenced their style of "Southern" Gospel music of which they are proud to be a part of! Their utmost desire is that lives would be changed, blessed, and encouraged for the kingdom of God through their music and testimony, and that in all they do, they would bring glory to God and Him alone. |
